TOEIC Top Tips 23

TOEIC_Test_TipsSo you’re taking the TOEIC test, congratulations!

Love Speaking is here to give you some very helpful tips on how to successfully prepare yourself for the test every week. Read our top 2 tips for this week below.

Haz click para conocer los mejores Cursos de Inglés Online

Tip #1: Set yourself a vocabulary goal

For example, if you learn 5 words a day for a year that will mean more than 1500 new words you can understand in English and being a whole level higher in reading comprehension. Once you have set that target, try to learn double that everyday, so that you are always ahead of your target and therefore motivated.

Tip #2: Join discussion forums

Reading an online forum about something you are interested in or knowledgeable about can be very motivating, as you will really want to know what people are saying and can write your own comments if you have some information that other people need, or want to say that you agree or disagree with someone. Like chat pages, there is also quite a lot of useful functional language like agreeing and disagreeing. You might also be able to find a discussion forum about other people’s experiences with the TOEIC exam.

Here are some of the most common adjective + preposition combinations:

interested in   –   guilty of   –   proud of   –   bored with

known for   –   scared of   –   tired of   –   worried about

The man was found guilty of committing the crime.

Janet: Hi guys, thank you for coming. I need to tell management the colours of the new car we are announcing next week, and I only have one day left to confirm. Now, Peter, which colours do we already have in our range?

Peter: Yes, first, we have red, blue, green, white and black already. However we can have a few new colours for people to choose from.

Linda: Yellow and pink for example may be colours that customers will not want.

Janet: Good. I agree, I think pink is bad. I would not like to drive a car that was pink. The fact is that yellow and gold together are the eighth most popular colours of car in the world this year.

Linda: Interesting. So, we have the following colours to choose from: silver, grey, brown and green, yellow and pink.

Peter: Green might be good for people in spring and who like the environment. I think that grey and silver are the same.

Janet: The new car is big. With a large car, a darker colour is better, like brown.

Linda: Our company doesn’t use darker colours, there is no way that management would like that.

Peter: Yes, the thing is, we need to stay with the brand image.

Janet: OK, so no dark colours. Grey and brown are out.

Linda: I think yellow is a good colour to use, if it is popular in the world. Also silver is very popular too – and it is pleasing to the eye.

Janet: Thank you very much with your help, I think now I have more information to help me choose!

Tip #1: Train your memory

Many people have memory problems when taking the TOEIC test like remembering what you heard in the text until you hear the questions. Even brain training for this that is not connected to language can be useful, e.g. playing memory games, completing logic puzzles or simply learning a new skill such as playing the piano.

Tip #2: Brainstorm vocabulary

There are several common situations in TOEIC that you need lots of vocabulary about, e.g. in the office, in restaurants, on the telephone, in a workshop or lab, in the street, in shops and on public transport. Taking one of those situations and brainstorming, for example, all the office furniture and equipment you can think of, using your dictionary to help you once you get stuck, can be really useful and motivating. Doing this as a spider diagram, linking together similar or connected words, can also help you think of more words and remember it better. Make sure you revise any new vocabulary in the week after brainstorming, then brainstorm again and see if you have missed any out or have thought of any new ones. Also make sure you learn the pronunciation of the words.

B: No, she doesn’t. She’s always kind of annoyed with everybody, she doesn’t ever praise anyone, she doesn’t even remember our names!

A:  Yeah, she doesn’t appear to enjoy her work anymore.

B: Richard says that she’s got strong negotiating skills.

A: Maybe, but I find working with her a bit difficult on a daily basis. For example, even though I arrive at 9:00 I have to wait an hour for her to turn up because she doesn’t get in until 10:00. Then she has her coffee and reads her mail so she doesn’t really start work much before twelve. I feel that we waste a lot of time every day and I’m sure it doesn’t make a very good impression on our clients. On the other hand, she stays in the office longer than me, and she always gives me that funny look when go home in the evening.

B: Evidently, being in the office from nine in the morning doesn’t count for her! What do your colleagues say about her?

A: She doesn’t really talk to anybody. She’s always busy or in a hurry, or late for a meeting… Many people say she doesn’t give them the support they need.
