I wish Elvis had been my language teacher…

Today it’s Thursday. It’s almost the end of the week and it’s about time that we relaxed a little. So I thought that we could learn a little English, with the help of Elvis Presley. We’re actually going to let him tell us how he can’t help falling in love with us.

Apart from the fact that it’s a beautiful song, it’s an excellent opportunty to learn some English. He sings slowly and clearly, allowing us to understand the lyrics easily.

‘Actually’ is actually a false friend

Publicado el by admin Publicado en English TIPS, Novedades | Deja un comentario

Screen Shot 2013-09-19 at 12.11.23 AM‘ACTUALLY’ IS A FALSE FRIEND. A really mean one at that, as it’s not easy for a native speaker to explain its meaning.

In almost every English class that I give, one of my students uses the word “actually” incorrectly. It surprises me that there aren’t more online posts for English learners, seeing as it’s so commonly misused. So I’ll go ahead and tell you why this devil of a word is a false friend, and how to actually use it.

The swinging Lindy Hop scene of Madrid and Toledo

Publicado el by admin Publicado en Novedades, Weekend Blog, WHAT'S HOT | Deja un comentario

swing_toledoI don’t want to sound like Ana Botella when I say this, but Madrid really is a city that has a lot to offer. Apart from a buzz on the street that I’ve not quite found anywhere else, the capital of Spain is brimming with a great variety of daytime and late night activities to keep you busy until 2014.

It was in Madrid, for example, that one evening some friends and I went along to a free Lindy Hop (also known as Swing dance) class to try it out. I don’t mean to sound dramatic, but this statement is true: ever since that day, my life has changed for the better.

Zero conditional

“What happens if we don’t recycle” uses the 0 conditional

There are four types of conditional in English. If you study each one at a time, it is much easier to learn. Did you realise that I just used the 0 (zero) conditional?

Most native English speakers make mistakes when using the conditional form, even in their own language. So I’m splitting up the 4 parts of the conditional to keep it nice and simple. Today we’re taking a look at the 0 (zero) conditional.

Ana Botella’s cup of cafe con leche ridiculed

Publicado el by admin Publicado en MAGAZINE, Novedades, Weekend Blog, WHAT'S HOT | Deja un comentario

Ana Botella inspired: Keep calm and café con lecheOver the weekend I couldn’t avoid encountering satirical commentary on Ana Botella’s now infamous speech on Saturday, in front of the IOC (International Olympic Committee) in Buenos Aires. I was even receiving Whatsapp messages about it from my friends in Spain, whilst still in the UK. That’s when you know something is buzzworthy.

It was clear to see that Botella had not only embarrassed herself, but the entire Spanish nation too. In fact, “Plaza Mayor” is still a trending topic on Twitter, 2 days after the speech. That’s not to mention the group on Facebook, A relaxing cup of café con leche in la Plaza Mayor, which has 110K likes.

Weather idioms

Talking about the weather in English: using weather idioms.

Everyone knows that discussing the weather is one of the Human Race’s most treasured past times – especially in the UK. During my visit here, I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy three whole days of warm and sunny weather, but I knew it wouldn’t last. And sure enough, today the good old British grey skies and pathetic drizzle that I’ve grown up with are back in full force.

I was lucky enough last night to have been invited to a private view of a new exhibition opening in London’s Notting Hill. Debut Contemporary hosted the event, so I went along with a friend Chrissy Cant, who works in the art industry. I was very excited, as I knew I was in for an interesting evening with some up-and-coming visual and performance artists.
