In this week’s magazine, we take a look back on the London 2012 Olympics and the impact that it had on other businesses throughout the summer. Do you think it was a positive or negative impact?

Read this short extract from the Love Speaking magazine now and see if you can decide:

“The London Olympics are officially over. Although the games faced a lot of criticism, London put on a great show. In fact, the games went off without a hitch. There were no terrorist attacks, travel chaos or security mishaps.  There were, on the other hand, empty hotel rooms, quiet streets and a drop in retail sales.

When London won the bid in 2005, a massive boost to the economy was predicted-over 2 billion pounds in fact.  The recession-hit country would surely welcome the millions of dollars that would flood in from tourists. Not to mention, degenerated areas of London’s east end were being revitalized with new buildings, shopping centres and train stations, amongst other things. The stage was set to welcome thousands of people to London, but strangely, businesses reported anything but a boost.”

Nuevo vocabulario

Criticism  =   to pass judgement  =  crítica

To go off without a hitch  =   to go smoothly  =  funcionar sin problemas

Mishap  =   accident, mistake  =  error

Recession-hit  =  to be experiencing a slow economy  =  afectdada por una desaceleración de la economía

Degenerated  =   run-down, to be in bad condition  = en mal estado

Flood in  =   to arrive in great amounts  =  afluir

Revitalize  =   to renew  =  revitalizar

The stage was set  =   to be prepared and ready for  =  estar preparado

TOEIC Top Tips 1

¡TOEICEnhorabuena! Vas a tomar el examen TOEIC.

Love Speaking is here to give you some very helpful tips on how to successfully prepare yourself for the test every week to help you succeed at each step of the way. Read our top 3 tips for this week below.

The first thing you need to do is set a goal. If you are taking the test as a requirement for a job, try to find out what level you need to get in order to be successful. Make sure that the goal is achievable. This means not aiming too high but also not aiming too low. This will ensure that you are not disappointed with the final result.

Tip #2: Understand the test Entienda el examen

Before you start studying for the test, make sure you understand the format of each section. You will be tested on your listening and reading comprehension skills. By doing practice tests, you will become very familiar with how the test works. It should become “second nature” to you before you attempt the real thing so that there is nothing on the test that will surprise you.

Tip #3: Make a study plan / Haz un plan de estudios

Even though you may have booked your TOEIC test months in advance, the day you decide to take the test should be the day you start to study too. You will have to decide whether or not you are going to teach yourself with  resources or take a preparation class. Studying at the same time every day is a great way to improve your score. Write down your study plan and stick to it

Do the Royals deserve privacy?

In this week´s magazine, we are focusing on one of the most talked about topics over the past few weeks and asking the question, Do the Royals deserve privacy?

If you are one of the few who still hasn´t heard about the Royal scandals, then this extract from the Love Speaking magazine will fill you in:

Haz click para conocer los mejores Cursos de Inglés Online

“In the last three weeks there have been two very public invasions into the private lives of the British Royal family. Yet, can the monarchy really expect to remain concealed from their forever fascinated public?

The French gossip magazine Closer has created quite a scandal with the publication of a selection of topless photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge while she was holidaying privately with her husband Prince William, in the southern French region of Provence last week.

To top it all off, this all follows last month’s humiliation for the royal family when naked pictures of Prince Harry partying in Las Vegas were widely posted online and in the media.”

Nuevo vocabulario

Concealed  =  hidden  =  oculto/a

Topless  =  to be naked above the waist  =  de torso desnudo

To top it all off  =   to make something worse / better  =  encima de todo

Widely  =   in many places  = en muchos sitios = esparcido

Monday morning blues!

Oh don’t we all have that sinking sensation on our stomach as Monday morning approaches! I’ve just had a wonderful weekend walking in the countryside, scrambling over rocks and best of all celebrating birthday parties! I’ve been baking  and trying to become a domestic goddess. Now one of the most traditional birthday cakes in England is the Victoria Sponge cake. It’s a simple recipe to follow and it’s absolutely delicious. It’s also a good way to practice your English by looking through food blogs! And even if you don’t fancy whipping up  a cake, there is some good imperatives which you can practice.

Vocabulario : Word up!
  • sinking sensation = tener un mal presentimiento
  • Baking = haciendo pasteles
  • whipping up = preparar rápido

Don’t forget imperatives are the base verb!

Read the instructions!

Preheat the oven.
Cream the butter and the sugar. (batir juntos)
Beat in the eggs. (batir)
Fold in the flour. (incorporar algo a algo)
Bake for 20 minutes. (hornear)
Spread the jam on the cooked cakes.(untar)
Add some strawberries for improved flavour.

Vocabulario Culinario : Word up!
  • cream = tener un mal presentimiento
  • Beat = haciendo pasteles
  • Fold in = preparar rápido
  • Bake = hornear
  • Spread = untar

Good luck with your cake!

Are you settled back in?

Good morning Lovespeakers! You should all be back to routines by mow and if you’re not, you should really push to get yourself settled in! If you remember, last week we looked at comments for making suggestions

How about getting up 30 minutes earlier every morning so you have time to grab some breakfast on the way?

Today I’d like to look at taking those suggestions up and agreeing with them and also turning them down in the nicest way possible.

Saying yes!

That’s a great idea! I might try that tomorrow.

That might work, I’ll certainly give it a go!

Saying no!

I’d love to but it takes 45 minutes to get in to work so I have to get up really early as it is.

That wouldn’t work for me as I’m not a morning person, I struggle to get up at 7.30 let alone any earlier!

or if you really don’t agree with the suggestion…..

Are you our of your mind? There is no way I am getting up earlier!

Chose your favourite and get practicing!
