The Salem witch trials

More than 300 years ago, trials began to be held in Salem Village. Villagers were being hung to death or taken to prison.  Twenty men and women were killed in total. This all happened because they were accused of being witches, in what became the “Salem Witch Trials.” In Colonial America, everyone believed in the supernatural, and magic was connected with the devil. Satan was blamed for every terrible thing that happened. The trials ended on October 12, when the governor said the evidence used was not enough, simply other villagers saying they had seen others with devils.

Secularists chose this day as a day to celebrate reason. October 12 is now Freethought Day among secular groups. The day is popular in the United States, were many consider that discrimination against freethinkers is everywhere. Freethought day celebrations want to give support to these individuals. The whole month of October is Freethought month, and people in many cities hold festivals throughout the month.

TOEIC Top Tips 3

So you´re taking the TOEIC test, congratulations!

Love Speaking is here to give you some very helpful tips on how to successfully prepare yourself for the test every week. Read our top 3 tips for this week below.

Tip #1: Isolate your weak points

After you have been studying the TOEIC for a while, you will find out which parts give you the most trouble. If you are studying by yourself, find a good reference book in the library and look up your questions. There may also be help on the Internet.

Tip #2: Don’t try to translate

Translating vocabulary and sentences wastes a lot of time. It is very rare that students have extra time during the TOEIC test. If you don’t know a word, look at the context of the sentence and the words around it. You will also not be allowed to use a dictionary when you take the test.

Tip #3: Guess as a last resort

On test day, if you don’t know the answer, and you have eliminated all of the distractors you can, don’t leave the space blank. There is a good chance you will not have time to go back to this question. You still have a 25% chance of getting the answer right if you guess. If you are sure that one or two of the answers are incorrect, your guess is even more likely to be correct

The ‘God’ Particle

Publicado el by ryan Publicado en MAGAZINE, Novedades | Deja un comentario

Lee nuestro nuevo post en inglés sobre la partícula ‘Higgs Boson’. Al final del artículo te dejamos nuevo vocabulario para que aprendas cada día un poco más.

In this week’s magazine, our focus is on the ‘God’ particle also known as the Higgs Boson. Read this short extract from the Love Speaking magazine now to learn more:

Haz click para conocer los mejores Cursos de Inglés Online

The Higgs Boson is a hypothetical particle that gives mass to other particles. Physicists think that after the Big Bang, an invisible field was created. This field is called the Higgs field, and it is everywhere. When particles interact with this field, they gain mass and move more slowly. The Higgs Boson is the smallest part of the field. It is so small, it cannot be observed directly. Scientists recreate the impact, but the Higgs Boson falls apart incredibly quickly.  We can only study the data that is left behind.

The Higgs Boson explains why particles have mass. If they didn’t, then nothing would exist in the universe, therefore neither would we. This particle is essential to helps scientists to explain how the universe works.

Nuevo vocabulario

Mass (n.)  =  the amount of matter in an object  =  masa

Hypothetical (adj.)  = being assumed to exist  =  hipotético

Invisible (adj.)  =   impossible to see  =  invisible

TOEIC Tips 2

¡Enhorabuena! Vas a tomar el examen TOEIC.

Love Speaking is here to give you some very helpful tips on how to successfully prepare yourself for the test every week. Read our top 3 tips for this week below.

Haz click para conocer los mejores Cursos de Inglés Online

Tip #1: Divide your study time

Each section is worth a certain amount of points. Don’t spend too much time studying one section. Many students make the mistake of studying the section that they enjoy the most. This is the section you should spend the least amount of time on. Try to focus on your weaknesses.

Tip #2: Build a strong vocabulary

Another reason some students fail the TOEIC test is that they have a very limited vocabulary. The day you decide to take the TOEIC test you should make yourself a blank dictionary. Use a notebook and keep track of all of the new words you learn along the way, including those you discover on Love Speaking!

Tip #3: Eliminate distractors

In every TOEIC question, there are at least two distractors (wrong answers that the writer uses to trick you). It is much easier to choose the correct answer when you have only two to choose from as the third choice is often impossible and easy to spot. There are many types of distractors such as, similar sounds, homonyms, repeated words, etc.

Check back next Wednesday for some more useful TOEIC tips on Love Speaking!
