Phrasal verbs can be a nightmare to learn. It takes a lot of memorising and a lot of practicing, and can be very boring. But it doesn’t have to be that way! If you pick a few verbs each time and make an effort to use them, it makes the whole process a lot easier. It also helps if you can see them in use.
So below I’ve selected 5 phrasal verbs that you should try to learn AND USE when you’re next practicing English. As I’m extra nice, I’ve written a little story using these phrasal verbs so that you can see them in context. You’ll find that below the phrasal verbs.

Hang out: spend time with someone (informal)
I hung out with my cousin yesterday; it was so nice to see her.
I met up with my friend Caroline last night. We hadn’t hung out in a long time, so it was great to catch up with her. She told me a hilarious story about when she was staying in London over the summer. She was out one night with some friends and she saw a hot guy in a bar. Caroline’s friend told her that she’d seen him checking her out, so after a drink or two she plucked up the courage to speak to him. When he asked her out at the end of the night, she thought she was going to pass out. She couldn’t believe it!
They met up the next night and went for a drink. They were chatting and laughing for hours and got very drunk. One thing led to another and, well, I don’t think I need to tell you what happened next. The next morning, she woke at 11am on the other side of London to her hotel, with hundreds of missed calls from her friends. They were really angry as they should have checked out by 10am. They were fined 100€ by the hotel each! Let’s just say that she had to do a lot of apologising to her friends!
